Books I'm reading right now
Reading is one of my favorite activities. Shocker, I know. But over the past few years it got pushed a little to the sidelines due to family and work commitments, and I found myself reading less and less. Then I joined a book club with some friends and whenever they were trying to choose a new title or debating genres, they’d ask what I was reading lately...and I’d have a huge blank. “Uhhh...” I would say, glancing at the bookshelf behind my desk, coated in a thin layer of dust, “You know, Memoirs of a Geisha, some Sophie Kinsella...same old stuff...a lot of nonfiction...” and then trail off in embarrassment as I realized I’d read more books about productivity and home organization than novels in the last calendar year.
So this year I decided to start a running list of books I’ve read. The purpose of this was twofold: 1) It documented that I was not, in fact, cycling through the same six novels over and over, and 2) it encouraged me to try out some new reads - both fiction and nonfiction - and enjoy the satisfaction of writing them on the list with an asterisk denoting them as such. I’ll post my whole list for the year at the end of 2025, but here’s a sampling so far:
Off the Clock by Laura Vanderkam
*Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
Atomic Habits by James Clear
*5 Love Languages for Kids by Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell
*The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel
French Lessons by Peter Mayle
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
What books are you reading at the moment? Do you tend to lean more fiction or nonfiction, or does that depend on whether or not you’re working on a writing project at the moment? I’d love to hear your recommendations!
